How Does Long Mold Abatement Take?

Mold abatement is a crucial process for safely and effectively removing mold from your property, ensuring a healthier environment. Since every mold issue is unique, the time required for abatement depends on several factors, including the type of mold, its location, and the extent of the infestation.

The duration of the mold abatement process varies depending on the size and severity of the issue. In general:

  • Smaller Areas: Abatement can take as little as 1–2 days for minor mold problems.

  • Moderate to Large Areas: Larger infestations or those involving multiple rooms may require 3–7 days or more.

Our team works efficiently while ensuring every step is performed with care and precision.

Understanding Mold Abatement vs Remediation

When addressing mold issues, terms like mold abatement, mold removal, and mold remediation are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings. Mold abatement focuses on halting the growth of mold to ensure it does not return after removal. In contrast, mold remediation involves not only removing the mold but also reversing any damage it has caused. The initial step in dealing with mold is to remove the affected areas and remediate any damage. After removing all existing mold and replacing any contaminated structures, the area can then be abated. Proper abatement requires our professionals to identify and address the root cause of mold growth, typically related to sources of excess moisture or areas with poor ventilation. By treating the source, we effectively prevent future mold problems, ensuring a mold-free environment.

Abatement vs Remediation
Abatement Work

How Does Mold Abatement Work?

We must do mold abatement to prevent the mold from reoccurring. While every mold situation we face is unique, there are some common threads that exist with every mold job we perform.  We first must identify the type of mold and where it is located.  Mold grows in areas with high humidity such as bathrooms, kitchens, or under appliances. It can also be found in areas that have suffered from water damage.  Water damage may have occurred from a weather event, leaking or cracked pipes, poor connections on a washing machine, etc.  After we remove the areas that mold has damaged, the process of abatement begins.  We will then identify the source of the moisture so we can treat the cause of the mold problem and prevent it from reoccurring.

Common Sources of Mold

  • Condensation on cool surfaces

  • Damp attics or crawl spaces

  • Humidifiers

  • Indoor plumbing leaks

  • Outdoor drainage problems

  • Poor or improper ventilation of heating and cooking appliances

Common Sources

Common Areas Mold is Found

Attics

Attics are a common area for mold to form and grow.  Because we spend little time in our attics and it’s not unusual that by the time you realize there is a problem, the mold growth can be significant. Depending on the severity and source of the problem in an attic, it may be necessary to remove, repair and replace damaged building materials.  After the mold has been removed, an anti-microbial sealer may be used in any areas that could be susceptible to mold growth to prevent the mold from returning.

Crawl Spaces

Because of a lack of light and ventilation, crawl spaces are an ideal breeding ground for mold.  To deal with mold in crawl spaces we establish negative air pressurization to avoid any cross contamination.  Using HEPA vacuums we clean all the framing, joists and sub flooring.  After cleansing any duct work, conduit or framing, we may scrape, sand or dry ice blast the wood framing.   At this point we can apply an anti-microbial sealer to the wood surfaces to prevent the mold from returning.

Common Areas

HVAC Systems

The easiest way for mold spores to be transmitted throughout a property is through the HVAC system.  HVAC systems and their duct work are naturally moist as condensation is a by product of their function.  The lack of light also creates a perfect breeding ground for mold.  When clients tell us they detect a musty smell in the air inside their home, it’s often an indication that the HVAC system has been compromised.  In addition, any mold or mildew that can be seen on the AC coils, filters or the duct work are signs you could have a mold problem.

HEPA Vacuuming

HEPA vacuuming refers to the process of vacuuming areas affected by mold using a vacuum that incorporates a HEPA filter. This helps remove any loose mold and the HEPA filter traps any small particles or mold spores and prevents them from becoming air borne.  Following it’s use the HEPA filters are properly disposed of

Air Scrubbers

Because mold spores travel through the air, an air scrubber cleans the air of any spores that are air borne. When our technicians detect the presence of air borne spores from an air quality test, air scrubbers are almost always used to deal with this problem.

Other Techniques

Other procedures used in mold remediation and abatement include the use of anti-microbial sealants, scrubbing pads, and various chemicals approved by the EPA for mold removal.
